Who Wore What At The VMAs 2014: The Good, Bad & Ugly

We were expecting much more from the MTV Video Awards this year. The show is famous for its shock and awe events such as Kanye interrupting Taylor Swift when she went on stage to collect her award in 2009 (yes, we still remember), Miley Cyrus twerking last year and the infamous kiss between Madonna, Britney and Christina in 2003. This time around there wasn’t much scandalous behaviour going on, except for Nicki Minaj’s wardrobe malfunction.

However, attendees made up for in their fashion styles what they couldn’t accomplish on stage. Although fashion styles at the VMAs are always entertaining, with artists choosing to experiment and get inventive with their looks, this year saw some particularly crazy (Amber Rose) and ghastly (Katy Perry) outfits on the red carpet. We have compiled a list of celebrity looks that were good, bad and downright ugly.

GOOD
These ladies sure know how to flaunt their figures (and bump), from Rita Ora, who looked ravishing in a Donna Karan, red slit gown (we bet Calvin Harris is kicking himself), to a very pregnant Kelly Rowland, who glowed in a light pink shimmer gown by Kaufmanfranco. Unlike elder sister, Kim Kardashian (who featured on our ugly list), Kendall Jenner is always impeccably dressed. The 18-year old model opted for a sheer top and black pants by Alon Livne that looked both sexy and sophisticated. Actress, singer and this year’s VMA host Lucy Hale also decided to keep it fun and young in her Oscar de la Renta printed pink-and-black strapless dress. What can we say—you ladies rock!

BAD
Solange’s pants and matching blazer (H&M!) were as boring as her hair—you would expect Beyoncé’s sister to have better taste in fashion. This year saw Taylor Swift going bolder and shorter, with an alphabet-print Mary Katrantzou playsuit that showed off those loooong legs. Guess she is getting tired of the good-girl image. Seventeen-year-old actress and model Chloë Moretz (who is rumoured to be dating the handsome Brooklyn Beckham) went a little too conservative for her young age, with Louis Vuitton pink pants and a long top. Agreed all teens want to grow up fast, but this is jumping straight to old age! In contrast, Ariana Grande’s Moschino outfit screamed bondage with all that leather. We are not sure if she knows that Anastasia in Fifty Shades Of Grey has already been cast.

UGLY
Katy Perry’s outfit, which is a copy of Britney’s look from the 90s, should have been left right there. The ghastly denim on denim attire was a surprising choice for her, as was that arm candy (yuck!). He’s really making us question the dangerous path she’s going down. Amber Rose is a beautiful and voluptuous woman, but looks like she forgot her clothes at home. This outfit by Laurel Dewitt is an eye-popper and leaves (absolutely) nothing to the imagination. Kanye’s lady, Kim, is supposed to be the next Coco Chanel, but we’re sure that after this poncho disaster Coco will be turning in her grave. We think pretty Brit singer Charli XCX was trying to channel her sexy inner tigress with this tiger-print Moschino (another one; how is Moschino designing such ugly clothes!) jumpsuit, but instead looks like an off-duty stripper. Very trashy, indeed!
