Colaba Social: Is It An Office? Is It A Bar? Well, It’s BOTH!
We love ourselves a novel concept—in a city inundated with cookie-cutter bars and restaurants with menus that can easily be substituted with each other, Riyaaz Amlani’s brand-new office-meets-bar had our ears pricked immediately. And Colaba Social did not disappoint!
First started in Bangalore and then in New Delhi (where it has a serene lakside setting), Social has now found its way to Mumbai. And are we glad it did! Owned by Impresario Hospitality (whose other ventures include Salt Water Cafe, Mocha, Stone Water Grill, Smoke House Deli and The Tasting Room), this is a cool, new space which is bound to become a favourite with us. Want to know why? Here are six reasons why we’ve fallen in love with Colaba Social.
1. It’s A Truly Novel Concept
Work by day, chill by night—all without having to leave the room. Social is a great place for freelancers and (really) small start-ups who are looking for a place to work, but do not want to invest in an office space. Open from 9am to 1.30am, you’ll get everything here, from a boardroom and conference facilities to a printer, scanner and high-speed wi-fi. There’s also an app that lets you rate the products and service as well as change music playlists.
2. It’s VFM. Really.
Social charges a flat fee of Rs 5,000 per month for its workspace. And this is all completely redeemable against the food and drinks. So, in effect, you’re getting your office space for free.
3. The Cocktails
L-R: Aacharoska; Cosmo-Explosion; Toxic Longest Long Island Iced Tea
We’re tripping on Social’s innovative cocktails and their presentation. Our Aacharoska (a caprioska mixed with lime pickle; Rs 280) came in an actual pickle jar, while the Trip on the Drip (vodka, peach schnapps, orange and cranberry juice; Rs 280) was served in a plastic bag in a hospital ‘drip’ format. We couldn’t wait to try The Reaction (vodka and Blue Curacao; Rs 280), which we’re told comes in a glass beaker with an injection syringe and the Cosmo-Explosion (vodka, cranberry juice and triple sec; Rs 300), which is served with a Martini glass filled with candy floss and a candied orange peel set on fire and plopped into the drink, but wisely left that for next time. What we did try (and would recommend) was the Longest Long Island Iced Tea, which was surprisingly well-priced at Rs 880 for a litre.
4. The Fact That You Can Create Your Entire Business Team By Just Hanging Out At A Bar
The Social app lets you see who else is in the bar at that time, which in turn tells you if that photographer or copywriter or interior designer you’re looking for is around. If they are, you can actually browse through their work online and decide if you’d like to approach them.
5. The Breakfast
L-R: Assorted fruits with yoghurt and granola; taco soup; sticky toffee pudding
The highlight of the food menu, you can choose Breakfast Trays (Rs 250 to Rs 380), where options include picks by owners and staff such as Riyaaz (Irish coffee, anda shammi, steak sandwich, PBJ and milkshake; Rs 380), Harmeet (muesli with fresh-cut fruits topped with yoghurt and granola, egg white omelette, multigrain toast, fresh juice/tea/coffe; Rs 300) and Kiran (two eggs any style, blueberry pancakes, bacon, home fries, toast with butter and preserves, Oreo cookies, tea/coffee; Rs 300).
6. The Super-Cool, Kitschy Décor
Strongly reminiscent of NYC’s Meatpacking District, Social’s design elements include bare, unfinished walls, skeletal table clamp lights, naked bulbs dangling from the ceiling and large, communal tables. The space is environmentally responsible and uses upcycled and recycled furniture ‘discovered’ in storage.
Colaba Social will be open to the public from Friday, 8 August 2014.
