Review of Crumbilicious: a dessert take away in Colaba
Dessert: A sure fix for the dilemma of working on a Saturday. We thank our stars for our discovery of a quaint little takeaway counter of Crumbilicious inside Butterfly Pond in Colaba from where we got our fill of delicious desserts.
Crumbilicious is a dessert take away in Colaba specializing in cupcakes, cheesecakes, tartlets, dessert jars and much more. Its founder Sanah Ahuja, an ex-hotelier by profession always dreamt of having an all day bakery where people could walk in and indulge in some yummy crumbly desserts.
A sweet sight for our working Saturday/weekend deprived eyes is what best describes her bite sized mini cupcakes, a customer favourite she tells us and we can relate why. We sampled an assortment of double chocolate, hazelnut, banofee, oreo, coffee and red velvet cupcakes.
Starting off with the crowd pleaser, double chocolate with its smooth frosting and a crumbly chocolate base, it instantly melts in your mouth. If you love Nutella, the hazelnut cupcake is clearly meant for you. With a dark chocolate icing sprinkled with hazelnuts and a vanilla base, it looks like the average cupcake, but bite into it and be wowed with the chocolate hazelnut ganache filling. With cream cheese icing, the red velvet cupcake instantly won our approval. The icing blended well with the rich and deep scarlet cupcake decorated with pink edible hearts and butterflies and was a perfect example of how a red velvet cupcake should be. Take notes home bakers. You can never go wrong with oreos and the cupcake didn’t disappoint either. With a dense vanilla base and just the right amount of oreo crumbs it managed to hit all the right spots. The moist coffee cupcake with its sweet aroma is what we would happily trade our morning cuppa for. Our absolute favourite was the banofee cupcake with a creamy whipped cream frosting and delicious banana toffee filling.
If you are a cheesecake aficionado, we recommend their blueberry cheesecake jar. With a silky smooth blueberry filling and blueberry topping, the cheesecake was a treat for our taste buds without being cloyingly sweet. The jar managed to impress even the non cheesecake lovers. Next on our tasting agenda was the Orange Hazelnut jar which left us a tad disappointed after all those delectable treats. Although we loved the intense orange flavour and mouthfuls of hazelnuts, the texture of the chocolate cake and ganache was way too dense for our liking. The very dense cake broke our plastic spoon in two, although in the cake’s defence, the spoon was too flimsy to begin with.
We saved the best for last for you. If you tried the yummy treats above and were still left unimpressed, we highly recommend you to try their chocolate sea salt caramel tartlets. A crunchy base topped with caramel, sea salt, dark chocolate filling and finished off with some edible glitter. It looked as good as it tasted. Our advice would be to pop the entire tartlet in your mouth or else you will be left with caramel dripping all over your hands like us, which we proceeded to lick off anyway.
