“Learn humility and punctuality from Sushmita Sen,” says Kresha Bajaj
Less than a year ago, Kresha Bajaj launched her label Koëcsh, a self-coined term that she claims is synonymous with chic, relevant, confident, fashion forward, daring and timeless. Since then, her ‘Koëcsh’ collections have dressed up the likes of Sushmita Sen, Priyanka Chopra and Sonakshi Sinha.
In a tête-à-tête with Inonit, she gives us insights into her label and personal style—and some handy fashion tips.
Your latest collection has an array of monotone ensembles. Can you give us style tips on wearing this trend?
“Single bold colours, especially black, help in creating a great silhouette, as the emphasis falls directly on the entire ensemble as opposed to a specific print. This also allows for the structure and construction of the garment to stand out more. A great way to glam up a monotone outfit is by pairing it with statement accessories. For the LFW show, we added tons of metallic jewellery to add to the edgy vibe. For a colour-blocked approach, you can add a contrast bag and a bright pair of shoes. For a subtler look, a white-and-black combination, if done correctly, ends up looking very chic.”
Your collection also contains a lot of black, which is not a usual colour for summer. How should one carry it off in the hotter months?
“Black is a timeless colour. Although uncommon for summer, its popularity is increasing drastically in ready-to-wear as well as traditional wear. If you don’t want to go all-black, wear a fun black crop top with a cool pair of vintage denim shorts and over-shirt, or you can pair your black pants or skirts with a coloured top. The demand for oversized floral chiffon robes is increasing and they look amazing paired over a simple black dress.”
You’ve had Sushmita Sen as your showstopper for LFW SS14. Can you tell us three things everyone can learn from her?
“Humility, kindness and professionalism. She is a former Miss Universe, but she is one of the most down-to-earth and punctual people I have ever met!”
Which are the latest fashion additions to your wardrobe?
“A vintage Thierry Mugler jacket, Jeffrey Campbell Caster Spike shoes and a custom Chain-Me-Down dress (above).”
Name five things one can always find in your handbag.
What, according to you, are three pieces of new-age accessories every fashion-conscious woman must own?
“Classic oversized vintage sunglasses, a metal box bag and Jeffrey Campbell Shadow Stud shoes (above).”
Being a fashion designer must mean that you’ve been experimental with your looks. Which is one fashion faux pas you committed that you still regret?
“I was always a crazy dresser; I have done ripped clothing, Goth floor-length robes, even black lipstick. Though I don’t think I regret any as they each represented a phase in my life, I do flinch a little when I see old photos.”
Lastly, tell us three fashion rules you absolutely don’t believe in.
“That your shoes and bag need to match; that you can’t wear leather in summer; and that you can’t mix gold and silver.”
