Fashion Flashback To The ’90s
The ’90s were an era when things were so much simpler, prettier and happier. Agreed. But it was also a time when we made some fatal fashion faux pas (not literally, but it sure feels that way!). If you are anything like me, then you too must alternate between reminiscing about the good times and cringing while looking at photographs of yourself wearing something that no one should be caught dead wearing today. Would it ease your misery a little if I told you that it wasn’t all that bad and that some of your sartorial choices from back then are actually making a comeback? Ha! Knew it would! Fashion has a knack of coming back after a few years, so rummage into your closet for these trends that are coming back in style and how!
Leggings in bright colours and bold patterns were all over the 90s. Remember Kimmy Gibbler’s neon tights from Full House? Maybe they weren’t such a fashion disaster after all as they make their way back into style. This time round however, you can wear them in trendier patterns like Aztec and floral prints.
Let’s choose to ignore the fact that Nicki Minaj probably knew that platform shoes were on their way back way before any of us did. We definitely won’t be embracing it with as many inches and colours as she does but we can definitely grab a pair or two to stand tall in as they come back with a vengeance.
Crop tops were all the rage back then and were considered sexy wear for the day as well the night. This year is all about embracing the belly, especially for your summer style. Wear them with high-waisted shorts, pants or maxi skirts for a look that’s totally in vogue.
Florals were everywhere from pants to jackets to baby doll dresses. I guess we just love this romantic print because there hasn’t been a time when floral prints were ever not in fashion. Back then it was all about big flowers in mostly pink, purple and white, unlike today where you can find floral prints in bright as well as dark colours in all sizes.
Even if it was those cheap plastic necklaces, all of us have owned some sort of choker in our time. Before you start fretting, don’t worry those plastic necklaces will never come back in fashion to haunt us, even if the choker has come back in style. The modern choker is slightly looser and not worn as high on the neck like before. Today’s choker looks much more fabulous than it did in the 90s for sure.
Denim on Denim
The ’90s were truly the decade of denim where denim shorts, jeans, shirts and vests were a wardrobe staple. It’s a blessing that the trend is coming back as there’s nothing more versatile than denim. If you haven’t already, get yourself a denim shirt to knot at the waist as a sexy crop top or leave the top unbuttoned for a chic off-the-shoulder outfit.
If you’re one of those who hasn’t had the heart to throw out your fave clothes from when you were younger, you’re going to save a lot of moolah while indulging is this trend. High-waisted jeans are no longer for moms but are now a must-have for the young and the sexy. From high-waisted skirts to even high-waisted bikinis, it’s time to pull those waistlines higher.
