Food Review: Smokey’s BBQ & Grill, Delhi
Owned by Shiv Karan Singh, who previously co-owned Smoke House Grill, Smokey’s BBQ & Grill is in the same section of Delhi’s VIPPS Center where the erstwhile Smoke House Grill once stood. While finding parking in that area is always a game of luck, the tiny market has always housed fabulous food joints and the record stands unbroken.
The Décor and Ambience
An elevated stage invites performances, including stand-up comedy and karaoke and live bands. The décor is brick and wood across two floors with pops of colour, glass bottles and art. Smooth jazz covers of popular songs swell to fill the space and make it a perfectly lazy afternoon.
An extensive wine list features more than 60 new and old-world wines. Smoked cocktails, aged cocktails and molecular cocktails make up Smokey’s BBQ & Grill’s drinks menu. We tried a signature cocktail, the Lock, Stock and a Smoking Barrel (Rs 525)—a little jar with a lid, containing Absolut, smoked pineapple, cardamom and vanilla pods. A tiny bit of wood smoke is cunningly trapped into it before they shut the lid so that each sip is a smoky bit of paradise. They make a mean peanut butter and banana shake too (Rs 250), for the teetotalers.
They’ve also introduced a mega 14-ounce, 10-inch meat patty Super Burger, and a pulled tenderloin 10-inch Super Hot Dog—the first in the city. No, we didn’t order those, because we’re not up for American portions yet! Their basket of house sauces is fantastic and a must-try. We recommend that atomic sauce and the anchovy sauce.
What we did order were Corn and Cheddar Triangles (Rs 390) phyllo stuffed with cheddar, jalapenos and grilled corn, served with a delicious blue cheese dip. The crisp triangles as well the dip, were excellent individually, actually detracting from each other when combined. The Spiced Coconut Marinated Fisherman’s Basket (Rs 580)—a dish of prawn, sole and calamari marinated in coconut and chilli and batter fried. Crisp and delicious even if one couldn’t really taste the coconut.
The Andhra Style Tenderloin Chilli Dog (Rs 480) is a great choice for those who like their food to set their tongue on fire—it has hot Andhra chillies with onion and strips of tenderloin. The Smoked Lamb Burger with Buttered Onions and Chilli (Rs 580) was the perfect combination of sautéed onions, pepperoncino and fried egg white.
One would imagine that we’d be full by now, but we were greedy enough to yearn for a little sweet something. And so it was that the Banoffee Pie (Rs 340) rounded off the experience perfectly—thick slices of banana and toffee with perhaps a tad too much cream.
The Overall Experience
Food that by definition belongs in a cafe, but only for those with a taste for the unconventional, with a sense of adventure. The experimental food, the jazz music, the sunlight streaming through the picture windows, make this the perfect place for a lazy Sunday lunch. Even parking will be easier!
