Guest Blogger: Sleeves, Necklines & Silhouettes for Your Body Type by Poorva J

Fashion Blogger Poorva Janbandhu shows us how to design clothes customized for our body type.

While of course, looks straight off the runway or from your favourite brand are going to be at their fashionable best, there is nothing more appealing and unmitigated chic than having a piece of clothing that no one else does. Yes, we’re talking customized clothing. If you’re lucky enough to wheedle your designer friend or cousin into creating you a generous set of clothing, and you’ve brainwashed him or her well enough, we’ve got Customized Clothing 101 all set for you.

While picking fabrics and the outfit type is your stance, this cheat sheet compilation will tell you exactly what will suit you best. First up, sleeve styles, read away girlies!

If you have-

Bulky upper arms: 3, 6, 7, 8 and 10

Bulky arms in general: 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10

Thin arms: 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 12

Perfect, slender arms: Do you even need a suggestion, sweetie? 1, 2, 4, 8, 10 look best on you.

For all arm types-

4, 8, 9 and 10 are great options for most arm types.

If your style is-

Vintage/feminine/romantic: 4, 7, 9, 11, 12

Casual chic: 1, 5, 6, 8, 12

Dressy bessy: 1, 2, 3, 10, 11

These are suggestions based on a more general view. Depending on how you dramatize or tone down your outfit, the look can change.

If you have-

A long, slender neck: Almost all neck types suit you. Avoid 8, 14 and other deep necks, while go overboard with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 15. Avoid peter pan collars with long collars. Wear round or short earrings.

Prefer styles where you can wear large statement chokers.

A short neck: AVOID 3, 4, 10 and 13. Create an illusion of a longer neck with 6, 8, 11, 12, 14. You can safely wear 5 and 7 with maybe a longer collars or deeper necklines.

A round face:

For all types of necks-

5, 9, 11, 12 and 15 are really versatile necklines!

If your style is-

Statement necklaces: Go for 1, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 14.

Statement earrings / long earrings: Would look best with 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11 and 15

Minimal accessorizing: Create elaborate yet understated styles with 2, 3, 4, 13 and 15

Slhouettes (1)

Adopt your silhouette preference as per your body type, height and the look you want to go for. Adjust lengths depending upon your build and height.

If you are-

Petite (5’3” or shorter) and thin: Types 1, 3 and 9 are very flattering. Try peplums, to accentuate a thin waist.

Short and healthy: Choose from 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 9.

Short and heavy: 2, 4, 6 and 8 will help minimize a heavy build. Avoid flares, or boxy silhouettes.

** Slight flares with a fuller, figure hugging style, make short/petite women look taller, so try incorporating them, especially through flowy, palazzo pants and flouncy skirts that go above or till the knee.

** Contrary to the popular belief long skirts won’t help you gain that illusion of height.

** Choose short-over-long or long-over-short silhouettes, and flowing, fluid fabrics.

Tall and thin: AVOID the slinky look. Try 1, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9. Incorporate pleats, ruffles, high necklines, boxy silhouettes, flaring peplums.

Tall and healthy: Make most of your versatile build by using 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7.

Tall and heavy: Make yourself look slimmer with 1, 2 and 8; try keeping your hem till the knee or below.

Normal height: You can go for most silhouettes without much thinking and pondering. That’s one lucky body type, no?

Normal height and heavy: 1, 2, 4 and 8 are the silhouettes you can select; try keeping your hem till the knee or above.

If your body shape is-

Pear shape: Avoid accentuating the lower portion of your body. Choose from 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8.

Apple shape: To accentuate the lower part of the body, go moderate on the fitting of the lower half of your outfit. Choose from 1, 4, 8 and 9.

Hourglass: Again, lady, you got no restrictions! But if you need to, accentuate your perfect silhouette with 2 or 8.

If your style is-

Feminine/romantic: go for 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Edgy/bold: go for 2, 6, 7 or 9.

Dressy: Choose 2, 3, 5 or 7.

Casual: 1, 4, 6 or 8 are great casual choices.

Understated/minimal: 1, 6 or 8 would work perfectly.
