InOnIt Guides: Art Walk In South Mumbai

Vibrant strokes of the brushes, thought provoking installations, narrating stories through photographs; every artist has his own way of showcasing his ideas. In this week’s InOnIt Guides we give you a list of art galleries across South Mumbai that you can stop by to be captivated by the different exhibitions on display.

Chatterjee and Lal

Moving from a mere 200 square feet space to 1,600 square feet, Chatterjee and Lal is located in a Victorian era warehouse.  The ongoing exhibition Five, brings together new works by Ashish Avikunthak, Sahej Rahal, Sadanad Shirke and Nityan Unnikrishnan in addition to key works by past artists. With its current exhibit, the gallery is showcasing works that have been exhibited at the space since 2007. The exhibition is on display till 22nd September, 2012.

Chemould Art Gallery

Housed in a hundred year old British colonial building, Chemould Art Gallery was inaugurated in 2007. Equipped with state of the art facilities, it represents works of major artists such as Tyeb Mehta, S.H Raza, Bhupen Khakkar, Atul Dodiya and more.

Currently, the gallery is exhibiting Of Bodies, Armour and Cages by Shakuntala Kulkrani where historical objects like armours and costumes of different communities are used as metaphors for protecting the body while simultaneously acting as a resistance to avoid the invasion of cultural and historical spaces. The works are on display till 15th September, 2012.

Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke

Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke ran a branch in Berlin from 1997 to 2003 before launching in the city in 2006. The gallery has hosted several solo exhibitions with Sigmar Polke, Kiki Smith and Jonathan Meese amongst others.  On view is Siji R. Krishnan’s paintings titled 0 + 0 = 0 (my father’s mathematics) that are a record of the memories of past and present and the battered and exhausted ‘self’. The paintings are on display till 29th September, 2012.

Gallery Maskara

Gallery Maskara is located in the heart of downtown Mumbai in Colaba. Although the space looks more like a museum, it is a commercial gallery that functions as a hub for the exploration of emerging ideas in the contemporary art.  Currently the gallery is playing host to Avantika Bawa’s second solo exhibition, Another Documentation where the artist presents the gallery as a construction site where everyday unnoticed ideas are put in a creative order.  The works can be viewed till 13th September, 2012.

Jehangir Art Gallery

Equipped with four exhibition halls, Jehangir Art Gallery is one of the best known art galleries in Mumbai. It attracts the best artworks and artists from across the city and beyond. On display is artist Narayan Sinha’s exhibition titled Narayan’s World where the works are an account of the journey embarked by the artist. The exhibition is on till 3rd September, 2012.

Mumbai Art Room

Mumbai Art Room is a public charitable trust in formation that exhibits contemporary art, design and visual culture from India and foreign countries. It aims to provide an alternative platform for artistic and curatorial practice.

Currently, the gallery is playing host to Cut Ups, an exhibition by international artists Christian Marclay and Tracey Moffatt in collaboration with Gary Hilberg. On display are movie clips that are digitally combined to make new compositions. The exhibition can be viewed till 5th October, 2012.

Project 88

Project 88 opened in April 2006 in the vibrant downtown area of Colaba with a solo exhibition of Bharti Kher. The key aim of Sree Goswami, the gallery’s director has been to seek out emerging artists and showcase them alongside more established Indian and international artists. The works explore the relationship between modernization in the urban setting and its effects on culture.

Tao Art Gallery

Established in 2008, Kalpana Shah’s TAO or The Way To Art highlights diverse art forms like painting, photography, sculpture, performance and installation arts. On display is Abstract Horizon, an exhibition of abstract paintings with bold poetry of colours from artists like Anwar, Yusuf, Vijay Shinde and more.

The Guild Art Gallery

The Guild Art Gallery represents emerging and established contemporary artists and works. With its current exhibition, A Floating Object, view works by acclaimed artists like Gieve Patel, Tushar Joag and Zakkir Hussain among others. On view till 4th September, 2012, it is an exhibition from the permanent collection of The Guild.

The Loft

A project of ArtWorks, The Loft began in 2008 as an artist’s studio and art source. Initiated by Anupa Mehta, The Loft is an art management consultancy that brings together her varied experience and interests under one roof. On display is Manchester based media and textile artist Adrea Zapp’s works, Third Skin where she captures urban views and rural panoramas via photography. These digital still lives act as a base for her handmade dresses showcasing quick snapshots taken across the globe.

The Viewing Room

The Viewing Room is a state of the art space situated in the hub of Mumbai’s art district in Colaba. Located on the 4th floor of a quaint pre-independence building, the gallery has a floor space of nearly 2500 sq ft. The gallery also consists a private lounge. Currently, the gallery is showcasing Evanescence, an exhibition that focuses on two integral aspects of art making – material and process that takes you closer to the thought behind the work of art.

Tasveer

Established in 2006, Tasveer is a photography gallery in India that holds 6 travelling shows a year across the country, as well as collaborates with galleries abroad.

Currently, the gallery has collaborated with Magnum ke Tasveer to showcase works of 8 photographers including acclaimed Indian photographer and Magnum contributor Raghu Rai. It is one of the largest photography exhibition series in India and can be viewed between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm at ICIA gallery from Monday to Saturday.
