Unique cafes

Bored of those done-to-death CCDs and Baristas? Unique coffee shops are what you really need. How about a hint of cinnamon here and a dollop of cream there? We list down unique coffee shops in Mumbai that will take your caffeine addiction to the next level. Think breezy afternoons, soft music, board games, artworks, themes and lots of dark, flavoured coffee. Awake yet?

Food For Thought – Café at Kitab Khana

One of our favourite spaces in the city, which reader/writer/coffee lover wouldn’t like a cafe tucked in a vintage bookstore? With high ceilings and wooden flooring, the Café at Kitab Khana called Food For Thought is the underdog of coffee shops.

WE LIKE - That you don’t have to carry your own book. When you feel like immersing yourself in a great book, just browse through their huge selection and grab a cuppa joe. Bhel puri sandwich, Vada Pav sandwich, cutting chai are only some of the unique options in the menu here. We always go back for the Affogato (ice cream in a shot of hot espresso).

Address: Food For Thought, inside Kitab Khana, Somaiya Bhavan, 45/47 Mahatma Gandhi Road, Flora Fountain, Fort, Mumbai

The Bagel Shop

A comfy café that has bagels ranging from grilled beef, goan sausages to natural cream cheese, The Bagel Shop has its fair share of loyal customers. From sandwiches and bagels, fresh fruit juices, coffees and smoothies to breakfast options, the menu is varied and the staff friendly.

WE LIKE – That no, we actually love it for the fact that it’s pet-friendly, has got wi-fi and makes great iced coffees! We also like the eccentric range of books it houses in the inside section, that you can browse through while listening to some old school music.

Marie Antoinette

If you like all things pretty, then this petite French patisserie will be a feast for your eyes. It’s nestled in a quiet Rizvi lane and can be missed easily, as the space is small with about 4 tables outside and 3 inside. Choose from different types of macarons, pastries, snacks like quiches and paninis, beverages and financiers (French pastry that is made out of almond powder).

WE LIKE – To sit on vintage chairs with intricate gold designs, eat out of pretty countryside cutlery and get welcomed by cute French owners. You don’t need a plus one to go to Marie Antoinette, it’s so peaceful and secluded from the main road that all you need is your financiers (French cake) and your thoughts. The only downside is that the coffee is not so good. Substitute it for a smoothie or give them exact specifications of how you like your coffee.

Wich Latte

A quirky New York style cafe with bright purple walls and green leaves, Wich Latte’s vibe is nothing less than happy and positive. It’s open every day from 9 am till 11 pm.

WE LIKE – That here, they bake their breads and bagels in-house every day and make gourmet sandwiches out of fresh ingredients. The desserts and coffee too, are a refreshing delight. Great to catch up on your reading as the place is brightly lit.

Cha Bar

Another one of those cafes in a bookstore, Cha Bar is located inside Oxford Bookstore and is a regular haunt for college kids around. The décor is contemporary and minimalistic, and you can relax here with a cup of tea (after choosing from a wide range of herbal, flavoured and fruit ones).

WE LIKE – That there are books everywhere, inspiring ones at that, and their variety of teas, Green Tea Margarita being one of our favourites. Visit when it’s time for a tea-m party!

Leaping Windows

Situated off Yari Road, Leaping Windows will bring out your geeky side in a cool way. A relaxed café and comic library, the space offers home-style food that will comfort your soul whilst your browse through some light reads.

WE LIKE – The little futons placed inside their reading room, where you can just lounge around like you would in your homes (except here you’ll be surrounded by your favourite comic heroes). You can get lost in TinTin’s adventurous world or help Sherlock unravel new mysteries, as they update their book collection every month.
