Lady Electric is Firangi Rang Birangi!

GET: a look at works by Toronto based artist Meera Sethi, life sized acrylic on paper pieces

IN: Bombay Electric, Bombay Electric, 1 Reay House, Best Marg, Colaba, Mumbai - 400 001 (Next to Taj Mahal Hotel)

ON: March 1st onwards

IT: is vibrant and quirky pieces that explore the relationship between material and nonmaterial culture and the construction of self through clothing.

About the artist: Meera Sethi’s practice references Indian dress history, contemporary fashion and the global textile trade with a particular emphasis on clothing, fashion and identity.

Femininity, dress and hybridity emerge as key themes in the pieces. In this series, she blends literal and metaphorical layers, Eastern and Western textiles, garments and jewelery, in order to re-imagine identity across borders. A fearless use of colour, bold pattern and finely rendered detail characterize these large, acrylic paintings which layer cultural history with personal style. While the surface of these works draw us in, the bodies that they adorn are barely revealed – an inversion that suggests the role of sartorial expression in creating a sense of self.
