Notes From Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014: The Grand Opening

Last night, the excitement was through the roof at the Palladium Hotel. Fashionistas, take notes, as we recollect the opening show of Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014. The event saw two completely different collections by designers Amit Aggarwal and Masaba Gupta. Masaba is known for her quirky prints, while Amit has a futuristic influence. We have recapped some of the outfits that we liked and those that didn’t quite light the fire in us.

Amit Aggarwal’s Deep Sea Inspiration
Sticking to his forte of edgy style, Amit’s collection included figure-flattering gowns with fishscale and sheer patterns, mermaid designs and textured detailing, mixed with flowing silhouettes. The colour palette mostly included metallics in bronze and maroon, with a few surprising outfits in purple, turquoise and red. The accessories of futuristic earpieces and long sheer veils, complemented Amit’s progressive aesthetic perfectly. Showstopper Sushmita Sen looked captivating as always in a sheer striped black dress. However, there were a few outfits that left us confused as to why they were even there.

What We Liked
The intricate detailing, waist-accentuating designs and the play of sheer on the gowns made us wish we were part of Amit’s underwater kingdom.

What We Did NOT Like
The long scary garb gives me the jitters. There was too much going on at once, and the outfits did not blend in the with the rest of the collection. Amit took creepy to a whole new level with these two pieces. What are you trying to say, Amit?

Masaba Gupta & Retro Fun
This Gen-Next designer has made her mark in the industry as one to be reckoned with. Masaba is known for her young, fun and quirky style. Last night’s collection saw her channeling ’70s retro style, with big bouffant hair, block-heeled shoes and glitter makeup. The pieces that ruled the runway included bell-bottom pants, deep V-neck tops, mini dresses, sarees and bell-sleeve shirts. Her modern take on the saree, with a mullet top worn over the garment, was amusing. Funky floral and bold circular were the designer’s choice of print. Showstopper Shilpa Shetty looked sexy in a long cut-out dress featuring a quirky print of a spoon on plate.

What We Liked
Fun colourful prints, a different approach to the age-old saree, and gowns with attached dupatta drapes make Masaba’s collection uniquely appealing.

What We Did NOT Like
Masaba took the retro style a little too seriously with these two pieces. The low-waist skirt looks outdated and unflattering. We like the flared style but pick one, either the top or the bottom, as two together looks like a mess. This is definitely not the fun and youthful style Masaba is known for.
