LFW: A Peek Into The World Of Fashion

The Lakme Fashion Week begins today as it sets new trends, looks and redefines the world of fashion. Here is a peek into the collections of some of the designers who showcase their designs in this week long event.

Starting with debutant Payal Khandwala, an artist who makes a foray into fashion designing with her collection, ‘Play’. Her collection does not focus on the current trends that are short lived or fashion that is obeyed blindly. Rather she says that it is a celebration of personal style and is therefore timeless. Inspired from the works of abstractionists like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, Payal’s approach to clothing is much like her art. With a different canvas to work with, she has infused the collection with a sense of play; the fabrics layered in different textures and colours.

Another designer to look out for is Jatin Varma who is known for his atypical creations and winning design sensibilities. ‘Glisten’ is an evening wear collection with nude colours, flowy cuts and clean fabrics with a tinge of sparkle. Jatin has designed gowns and dresses in a laser cut look with a matt sequin finish.

For summer weddings, brides can browse through Payal Singhal’s ‘Resort Bridalwear Line’ that will be showcased at the LFW on 5th March, 2012. Payal Singhal presents a look that a summer bride could wear at her destination wedding. Inspired by the essence of an Indian summer wedding and the mystical chaos of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, the collection has a range of dresses, gowns, lehengas, sarees and kurtas. Designed with georgettes, silks, banarsis, brocades and Payal’s signature style with pita kora work, the outfits are made in colours like indigo, purple, emerald and turmeric.

Also, catch the launch of the new fashion retail venture, ‘Karmik’ on 5th March at 7:30 pm. Karmik aims at providing designer wear at affordable prices. The brand will house sarees, salwar kameez and tunics exclusively sampled and created by some of the biggest designers including Rohit Bal, Anamika Khanna, Rocky S, Shantanu & Nikhil, Neeta Lulla, Rina Dhaka, JJ Valaya and Ranna Gill.

Designer Debarun Mukherjee visits the yesteryears with his collection at the LFW. He delves into an era which thrived on simplicity and purity. With pure white dominating his collection, he has used colours that are inspired by nature and human emotions. Inspired from the 50s and 60s, the collection has kaftan with churi pants, flared trousers with short tops, A-line skirts, suits and sarees for women.  For men, the collection has kurtas, suits, draw string flared pants and shirt

kurtas to offer. Debarun has used white with shades of various pastel colours to recreate an age that symbolizes simplicity and innocence of times.

While Debarun’s collection symbolises the olden days, Narendra Kumar’s collection has a youthful energy, colour and cross cultural elements. The designer claims that he was enthused by the groovy song, ‘moves like jagger’ which was the starting point of conceptualising his collection. The range has new ways of combining fabrics for menswear with a blend of international flavour and is based on the elements of American sportswear, Indian and tuxedo evening wear.

Lastly, in celebration of femininity, Bhairavi Jaikishan presents her collection titled, ‘Sensuous Women’ on 3rd March, 2012 at 3:00 pm. She has been in the fashion industry for more than a decade and this season, her muse is Amy Jackson. A velvet yellow blouse with silver metallic embroidery worn with a salmon pink lehenga saree with floral embroidered bouquet sprays, Amy is a vision of a sexy yet subtle feminine.
