Review: Cafe Pico at Phoenix Marketcity

Cafe_Pico_spicy_mozambique_chickenAs we were wandering around checking out the stores at Phoenix Marketcity, we stumbled upon the new outlet of Cafe Pico. With a name as strange as Pico for a cafe, that carries the tag of serving you the best in world cuisine, this one does exceedingly well. A quick glance at the menu and you’ll realise that it is not an ordinary one. You can spot dishes from Korea, North Africa, Nigeria, Greece and Bulgaria among others. The cafe embarks on a journey to bring eclectic flavours from the lesser known countries of the world to the Indian palate. So get your engines started.

Brightly lit with a laid back environment and with a blend of traditional and contemporary atmosphere, the cafe comes across as a place where you can enjoy a long, lazy bistro-style lunch. One issue they are currently facing is the air conditioning, owing to the fact that the newly opened mall is still in its early stage of development. Also, Cafe Pico hasn’t acquired its liquor license yet, so for now patrons may opt for the juices. We were willing to overlook these as there are always a few teething issues every restaurant must face.

Now, the bright side. The cafe offers fresh and nutritious cuisines that include salads, sandwiches, pastas, mains, smoothies, desserts and more. We kick started our meal with the Korean pancakes. Slightly burnt on the surface to get the touch of of a golden-brown texture, we were served delicious traditional pancakes made from a combination of yellow lentils, carrots, spring onions and chillies. The soya and sesame dip added a rich flavour to it. Following this was the Suya chicken, a traditional Nigerian recipe. The juicy and tender skewered chicken was served with delectable peanut based sauce. Next on the line was the chicken sambussa or the North African version of samosas. With minced chicken wrapped in a thin crispy crust, it was cooked to perfection.

The highlights of the meal were the fish cakes and the spicy Mozambique chicken. The large round golden cakes made from Basa fish were served with blanched spinach and bois boudrain sauce. The flavours were unparalleled. The spicy Mozambique chicken was well marinated, tasted tangy and was served on a bed of tapioca tabouleh. With the rich in-house barbeque sauce to go along with, the dish favours the Indian palate. On the other hand, the homemade tagliolini, with lingurian pesto, green beans, cherry tomatoes and pine nuts, wasn’t to-die-for. We ended the meal with a large portion of rich, dark and gooey Belgian chocolate cake that melted in our mouths. The German beer coffee cake is another dessert that is a must try if you are at the cafe.

With delicious food and some perfectly presented dishes that are high on nutrition, we are definitely heading back to Cafe Pico!
