Review: Pastaa Bastta on Carter Road
We dropped by the newly opened Italian quick service restaurant Pastaa Bastta on Carter Road on a lazy Sunday afternoon. We noticed that albeit tiny with only a table in front of the counter and few single seatings with high stools inside, this little eatery gives you a whiff of Italy – with a live counter of fresh veggies (zuchinni, rocket leaves, sun dried tomatoes and more), little anecdotes of Italian ingredients on the walls, mellow Italian music playing in the background and an Italian owner, who will brush up your knowledge on their food and culture.
The menu is dominated with a variety of pastas along with salads and desserts. Emiliano Collazo, the owner, informed us that they would introduce more options such as lasagna soon, while talking dedicatedly about his brainchild. They have adopted the concept of personal meals in a box, where you can make your own pasta. After choosing the type of pasta, the sauce to go with it, garnish and veg and non-veg options, the final meal comes to you in a paper box, enough to satiate your Italian craving. A pasta box will cost you approximately Rs. 200, which is indeed a much cheaper option compared to the fine-dine counterparts in our city.
We tried the Quattro Formaggi, a four-cheese pasta that came with bright cherry tomatoes on top. This is a definite choice for cheese lovers as the dish is generously mixed with fresh cheeses that melt in your mouth with each bite. The Aglio Olio on the other hand is a lighter, slightly healthier option – tossed in olive oil and herbs, we got this one with paprika chicken to add some spice to our meal.
Our favourite would have to be the Wild Mushroom pasta, which was the day’s special on the little black board. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly, and the pasta al dente. It was a creamy mix of flavours that we want to taste again soon.
The salad comprising fresh rocket leaves, cherry tomatoes, and mozzarella blocks left us with no complaints either. Unfortunately, the desserts that are sourced from home chefs, were sold out for the day. So, we left, stuffed and satisfied and walked towards the setting sun, trying not to get swept away with the late afternoon sea breeze.
It is not close to a fine-dine, but Pastaa Bastta’s fresh, good quality pasta served at extremely affordable prices is definitely going to lure us back here soon.
Pastaa Bastta delivers in Bandra and Khar, and is open from Monday to Thursday from noon till midnight and from Friday to Sunday till 1:15 am.
