A Talk With Anita Dongre: Latest Collection at LFW, Fashion Tips and More
If you adore fashion and love dressing trendy, you probably have one of the quirky and interesting pieces from AND and Global Desi. We spoke with the brainchild behind these brands the illustrious designer Anita Dongre.
Anita Dongre has been in the fashion designing field for over two decades and has created apparel for the glitterati of Bollywood. We spoke with Ms. Dongre about her upcoming collections for Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014.
We can’t wait to see what you have in store for Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014. Can you tell us about your collection and your motivation behind it?
My current collection is called ‘Varanasi Weaves’, and it is a celebration of the rich textile heritage of India. The finely hand-woven cottons of Varanasi motivated me to create a unique design ideology.
You will find an elegant melange of prêt separates matched with couture elements for a boho luxury look. From straight cuts to flairs, pencil skirts, column gowns, voluminous full-length skirts, crop tops and more, you will find a range of apparel with a touch of weaves from the old city.
How does Varanasi Weaves relate to today’s woman?
Ancient weaves combined with contemporary designs reflects the spirit of today’s Indian woman. She challenges convention, yet values her rich culture and tradition.
Last year we saw bright pastel hues, what is the colour palette for your apparel this year?
The colour wheel spins some vintage magic with old rose, buttercup yellows and powder blues, along with muted and neutral tones of nude, dull gold and the summer classic – white. These shades will offer a versatile, contemporary yet feminine look.
Suggest a fashion trend that our readers must try this season.
A fashion trend that people must try this season is a flattering pencil skirt with a casual fun top; an interesting mix of prêt with couture elements. Sheer continues to be a big trend this season – sheer tops, gowns, panelled skirts are all in vogue.
Can you give a few tips for the upcoming designers to make their designs wearable, yet exclusive?
My advice to upcoming designers is that you need to understand the psyche of the woman you are designing for. The clothes should be an eclectic blend of comfort with fashion. Keeping your aesthetic element intact, continue to innovate and create versatile fashion pieces that cater to a woman’s sartorial choices in a way that takes her from a fun day look, to a glamorous evening one.
Which international celebrity do you see wearing your current collection beautifully?
Somber shades and strong cuts would look ideal on Charlize Theron and Cate Blanchett.
Anita Dongre’s collection will be showcased on the Indian Textile Day at Lakme Fashion Week on 14th March 2014.
