Untamed by Nikhil Thampi for Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014
Sonam loves his designs; Anushka and Kanganawear it like a diva; Kalki, Parineeti and Jacqueline look effortless in those cuts and hues. We’re referring to the niche, exotic and alluring apparel by Nikhil Thampi.
He is one designer who has won the hearts of celebritiesand fashionistas alike. Hence, we decided to understand what goes on in that creative brain of Nikhil, when he combines elements of LBD, sheer and saris. Check out what he has to say about his Lakme Fashion Week collection.
Your previous collection was mainly gold, black and white with a touch of sheer. What can we expect at this collection?
‘Untamed’ is my SS14 collection that depicts the power of the sexes and their freedom for uninhibited expression. It is an amalgamation of new age, urbane sophistication with rebellion against social conformism.
The collection commences with a white structured line up of garments moving into shades of pink– rose, blush and dusty nude. Finally, it evolves into a fun, flirty mix of strong & bold colours such as red, mango, yellow, purple, teal and tan leather.
What was the thought process behind creating this collection?
‘Love and Let Love’ is the dominant thought process behind the creation. It traces the transition of an individual breaking free from the shackles of social acceptance and discovering one’s true inner strength and persona.
Can you define the main characteristics of a woman who would don your current collections?
I am blessed to be surrounded by wonderful women who have taught me to highly respect and appreciate their beauty. My main goal has always been to ensure that every customer gets a unique design that helps highlight their beauty and makes them feel sexy and confident in their skin, with a perfect balance of comfort and style.
What are your fashion picks from international runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris? Can you suggest a few hot trends for Indian summer?
Androgynous silhouettes, a hint of floral, baggy loose and anti-fit clothes, quirky accessories and neutral silhouettes are massive on international runways this season. We may see these on Indian runways too. Also, a balance of soft pastels and bright, bold colours will be prominent. Grey will be a dominant pick over black and white.
Your favourite wardrobe staple.
A good pair of denims and a basic white teeis my favourite wardrobe staple. Add a blazer to create a formal look, add sneakers for an androgynous vibe or add a pair of heelsand accessories for a more glam ensemble.
We thank Nikhil for these valuable fashion tips, and we are sure to check out the Untamed collection.
