The Week That Was: Of Drones and Holograms
Let me be the proverbial cool breeze on this sweltering summer day and add that much-needed masala to your predictably manic Monday. Without further ado, I bring to you a round-up of the ‘what’s goin’ on’ and ‘who’s who’. (Look, I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it!) Okay please don’t go…I’ll stop.
Next Level Bro
You know the Jetsons are real when, before you know it, a drone is delivering piping hot pizza to your doorstep. Francesco’s Pizzeria in South Bombay tried this experiment with a four-rotor drone which took off with the order from its outlet in central Mumbai’s Lower Parel area and delivered it to a high-rise building in the adjacent Worli area. They took a video of the whole process which has gone viral on the internet. They claim to have tried this just as an experiment but hope to shift to it in a couple of years. Well, me thinks it’s excellent marketing for their outlet. Suddenly everyone’s discussing the very avante garde pizza outlet. But we hear that they have gotten in trouble with the police who claim they didn’t take permission to conduct this experiment. Oops! Guess they should have offered the cops some pizza first. Or wait, is that too cheesy?
All Hail Holograms
Five years after his death, a digitally-recreated King Of Pop Michael Jackson stole the show at last week’s Billboard Music Awards as he sang, danced and moonwalked across the stage in way we have always known and loved. The four-minute performance was a remarkably convincing illusion made possible by the latest breakthroughs in human animation, visual effects and facial modelling, combined with techniques first pioneered by 19th-century magicians. The performance included Slave to the Rhythm from Xscape, a posthumous album of previously unreleased recordings. Jackson’s family and fans are said to have been moved to tears because it all just felt so real, like it was actually him performing. Well, what can we say? The King of Pop lives on in our hearts anyway.
Okay, I will admit that when a Dharma banner film based on an Indian wedding is about to release, I feel familiar childlike glee. And this film, a love story between Humpty (Varun Dhawan) and Kavvya (Alia Bhatt), who meet in Delhi and romance in Punjab seems like it’s going to have all the makings of a masala blockbuster—with foot tapping music et al. So far, they have tried to approach the young selfie-loving audience with their first poster. FYI, they call it a ‘humphie’ (really not sure what I feel about that). But what’s really caught my attention is this little promo with Varun Dhawan inviting people to message him on Whatsapp. I know he’s supposed to be an adorable, bhola Punjabi boy… but why is he talking like Hrithik from Koi… Mil Gaya? Watch and tell me if you agree!
Troubled Times for the Kapoors
Karisma Kapoor’s estranged husband has filed a petition for the custody of their two children, Samaira and Kiaan. This is reportedly because, ever since she has moved to Mumbai, she doesn’t let him see the kids. He on the other hand is rumoured to be dating Priya Sachdev, who was previously married to hotelier Vikram Chatwal. Karisma seems distressed and is soon planning to file for divorce (or has already). It’s really sad how children get affected in the whole mess. We wish the family peace and amicable times ahead.
And you thought we got through the week without talking about the most talked-about wedding, like ever. Everywhere we looked this week, it’s all we came across. Speculation and more speculation about the venues, the dresses, the guest list and more. Well, I shall share with you everything I know in a nutshell. Kim’s brother Rob flew out before the wedding, giving us a hint that a major family feud must have occurred. The wedding finally took place in Florence; Beyoncé and Jay-Z were not at the wedding. And Kim wore two stunning dresses that must have basically cost as much as a little country. But all the goss, Instagram uploads and crazy apart…Kim Kardashian, arguably the world’s biggest reality TV star, and hip-hop sensation Kanye West are finally husband and wife. Congratulations to the Wests!
Phew! Is it just me or did we cover a lot in The Week That Was? Whatever it was, I’m done for now. See y’all next week…with all the goss as always. Till then, stay happy. Toodles!
