The Week That Was: 3rd to 9th March

The heat is setting in, say goodbye to those wintery nights where even the ceiling fan had taken a sabbatical. Along with the temperature, air-conditioners and nimbu paani sales are about to rise. Oh well! We have Holi coming up and who doesn’t love Holi? And how can we forget about MANGOES! That’s enough compensation for the perspiration that is to follow.  Let’s take a look at what else was hot in The Week That Was.

Ellen selfie:  Outshining all the winners and the losers (yes Leo, an eternity of memes await) at this years Academy Awards was the Ellen selfie. Rumour mills were abuzz with whether the picture was spontaneous or staged, people don’t know what movie won best picture but they know the members of THIS star cast ensemble. With over 3 million retweets, garnering it the tag of the most retweeted tweet in the history of Twitter (impromptu tongue twister! Say this sentence 3 times really quick! Go!) it definitely has valid credentials to be ruling the roost.

The Week That Was

Women’s Day that was: Venus threw down a mega birthday bash to celebrate Women’s Day. Party essentials included unlimited cupcakes and shirtless Brad Pitt lookalikes. Yea that didn’t happen. With airlines offering discounts, the police starting an SMS services to help women in distress, pepper spray being handed out on local trains and FMCG marketers doing some female-friendly CSR, it didn’t seem like what a celebration would entail but it was definitely a step in the right direction.

The Week That Was

Flight MH370: One of the more tragic pieces of news to digest was the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370. Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers including 12 crew members, it lost contact with the ground mid-way over Vietnamese waters. With search and rescue operation running it its 48th hour and still no signs of the wreckage lots of people have been left miffed. Let us hope and pray for the best.

Sri Lanka wins Asia Cup: After our boys in blue got battered black and blue there was a silver lining about the Asia Cup. Firstly, Pakistan didn’t win! That would’ve stung. Secondly, Sri Lanka finally WON a final; they’ve been direct entries into almost all major finals over the past few years but somehow just choke before the finish line. Enter Slinga Malinga, destroying the Pakistani batting line-up with some spellbinding bowling, finishing with figures of 5-56. Spectacular!

The Week That Was

Gulab Gang and Queen Release: The hullabaloo over Gulaab Gang’s release stole some sheen from the Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla combination, these two yesteryear (they are considered yesteryear right?) starlets joined forces for an empowering story that finally needed some high court intervention. Even Queen got some stellar reviews with an apparent stand out performance from Kangana. Let’s hope people remember her for her acting prowess now and not for her antics (with Suman.Jr and Pancholi.Sr, remember?)
